OPC Releases PIPEDA Reference Guide for Businesses

This month, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada released a comprehensive guide that was developed to help businesses better understand and comply with their responsibilities under PIPEDA.

The guide contains a summary of PIPEDA and what the Act applies to and outlines the ten principles on which PIPEDA is based. These include:

  1. Accountability
  2. Identifying purposes
  3. Consent
  4. Limiting collection
  5. Limiting use, disclosure and retention
  6. Accuracy
  7. Safeguards
  8. Openness
  9. Individual access
  10. Challenging compliance

Noting that citizens expect full transparency with organizations they do business with, the OPC goes into depth around meaningful consent and privacy breach requirements.

The guide includes some useful tips and checklists and we would highly recommend downloading the PDF and circulating it within your respective organizations.

As we anticipate further amendments to the Act in 2021 and prepare the industry with a framework that is regarded as best in class in Europe, we will continue to stay closely involved with developments and inform our members accordingly.
