Global Alignment on Privacy: UK Regulator Endorses IAB Tech Lab’s Data Deletion Request Framework

IAB Canada congratulates IAB Tech Lab on a significant milestone in global privacy leadership. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has formally recognized the Data Deletion Request Framework (DDRF) in its latest Online Tracking Strategy Update, calling out the specification as a meaningful step forward in improving how deletion and withdrawal requests are handled by third-party digital advertising participants.

This endorsement signals an important moment for the entire IAB global network. As jurisdictions around the world enact and enforce privacy legislation with greater urgency, industry-built, regulator-engaged technical standards like the DDRF are proving essential in translating policy into practice.

The DDRF enables companies across the ad supply chain to process consumer data deletion requests in a standardized, scalable, and secure manner—addressing one of the most complex obligations under global privacy law.

“This recognition from the ICO underscores the critical role IAB is playing globally in developing practical, interoperable solutions that help our industry meet privacy obligations with confidence,” said Sonia Carreno, President of IAB Canada. “We are proud to support and collaborate with IAB Tech Lab as it continues to lead the charge on privacy innovation, moving our ecosystem from policy debate to responsible execution.”

As part of its ongoing work to strengthen the framework, IAB Tech Lab will be releasing updates to the DDRF later this summer for public comment, incorporating feedback from regulators and implementers to improve efficiency, security, and error-handling across the board.

IAB Canada encourages all Canadian stakeholders to stay engaged with this effort and to participate in the upcoming comment period. These global initiatives, supported by regional IABs, exemplify what’s possible when the advertising industry works together with purpose, rigor, and transparency.
